Best advice you’ve ever received, and do you actually follow it?
Maybe the best advice isn't advice at all. It's an observation.
Decades ago, as I was walking into an HSC exam, my teacher looked at me and said, "You're so much better than you think you are." I've never forgotten it. Thank you, Ms Reidy!
What’s (still) on your bucket list?
Living in Italy for a few months, returning to Africa, and continuing to say yes to experiences that stretch (and maybe even scare) me.
What impact are you hoping to make through your work?
I hope people leave our conversations clearer about who they are, what they want and with the confidence to do something about it.
Favourite local restaurant, and what are you ordering?
Almost anywhere as long as I don't have to cook! I love simple food done well. A great steak, grilled fish or tapas shared with friends is hard to beat.
If you could sit with any woman for a long lunch, who would it be and what would you ask?
My ancestor Elizabeth Rymes. Convicted in England at age 15 for selling stolen hotel sheets (for 7 shillings!) and transported on the Neptune arriving at Port Jackson in 1790. She survived the notorious Second Fleet where nearly 50% of convicts died enroute, married my ancestor Matthew Everingham, had 10 children, endured plenty of hardship and built a life in Australia. I'd love to know who she really was.
What helps you get into your best work zone?
Put me in a room with a person (or people) who are willing to think, reflect and have an honest conversation, and I'm in my happy place.
You can only pack three things in your handbag. What’s coming with you?
My kindle, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream and my phone. One feeds my mind, one saves my lips, and one does everything else.
What book or podcast has made an impact on your business?
I recommend books and podcasts all the time, so choosing one is difficult. Right now, I'm loving Mark Manson's podcast, Solved. Deeply researched, thought-provoking and never afraid to challenge conventional wisdom.
What’s something people may be surprised to learn about you?
People often assume I'm extroverted through and through. And it's true. I love people, conversations, challenge and laughter. But wow, do I crave and savour downtime. I'm very happy on my own, where I can hear myself breathe.
What are you excited about next?
I'm feeling ready for another dog. It will undoubtedly turn my life upside down, but I suspect it will also make it richer in all the best ways.
